Scarecrow Army by Leon Davidson is a powerful story of the war at Gallipoli. Using both fact and fiction the author paints a vivid picture of what it was like to be a soldier in the trenches. The listener is taken on a disturbing journey through the turmoil and tribulations of young Australian and New Zealand men fighting bravely against Turks who were not a faceless enemy but men like themselves.

Davidson has researched his subject thoroughly and the book leaves a lasting impression. The futility of war and the ineptitude of some officers is explored as well as the courage and mateship of men who struggled to stay alive in horrific conditions while being aware that they probably would not survive the next onslaught.

Noel Hodda’s reading does justice to this book, which will give its audience of upper primary/lower secondary learners an in depth understanding of the history surrounding Gallipoli while maintaining interest in the characters and conflict.
